Trees Ontario Sponsors 2008 Premier’s Awards
November 13, 2008 – Trees Ontario is proud to be a sponsor of the 2008 Premier’s Awards, to be held on February 23, 2009 in Toronto. As part of this sponsorship, Trees Ontario have pledged to plant one tree for each of the 1,000 attendees expected at this year’s awards. These trees will be planted during the spring 2009 plant.
To commemorate Trees Ontario’s involvement, a ceremonial tree planting activity was held at Fleming College in Peterborough on November 13, 2008, where the first tree – a native white pine, which is the provincial tree – of the 1,000 pledged trees was planted. The event was hosted by The Fleming College Foundation along with the Alumni Association in recognition of Fleming College’s past, present and future nominees for the Premier’s Awards. Planting a tree in honour of the Premier’s Award nominees and recipients is a fitting and sustainable way to pay tribute to high-achieving, community-minded individuals.
The Premier’s Awards for Ontario College Graduates recognizes the outstanding achievements made by Ontario college graduates towards the success and sustainability of Canada’s great culture and economy. The awards, which were launched in 1992, honour six outstanding graduates in the following categories: business, community services, creative arts and design, health sciences, technology and recent graduate. There are 24 colleges in Ontario from which 89 alumni were nominated and six will be chosen as this year’s award recipients.
The 17th annual Premier’s Awards ceremony will take place on February 23, 2009 at the Westin Harbour Castle in downtown Toronto. Over 1,000 people are expected to attend including Ontario’s Premier, Dalton McGuinty.
