CAA made driving safer for you. Now we’re greening it up too.
THORNHILL, ON, June 5 – Today is World Environment day. To commemorate this important event CAA South Central Ontario is launching its 2009 Autogreen campaign.
This year CAA South Central Ontario’s goal is to plant 20,000 trees in the hope of reducing the equivalent of 260,000 pounds of carbon being released into our atmosphere.
Members can have a tree planted on their behalf by participating in the Autogreen program. Each time a member participates we’ll plant a tree and take care of it for five years through our newest partner, Trees Ontario.
“Trees Ontario is pleased to be working with CAA South Central Ontario on its Autogreen program,” said Michael Scott, President and CEO of Trees Ontario. “Over the next year we will be planting trees in select areas across the province to recognize member participation in the program.”
According to Trees Ontario and the Ministry of Natural Resources we face a serious challenge re-establishing the tree planting infrastructure and tree planting capacity across southern Ontario.
“We want to provide members with a trusted partner they can work with to lessen their impact on the environment by replanting trees to reduce vehicle emissions. Trees Ontario is working specifically in our members backyards to restore a healthy balance of life to our members,” said Anna Halkidis, manager of program design for CAA South Central Ontario.
Members and the public can log onto www.caasco.com/autogreen and take the Autogreen Challenge from June 1 – August 7, 2009. If they take an action they can be entered to win a Toyota hybrid vehicle.
Canada has one of the highest ratios of car ownership in the world with close to one vehicle per two people. One healthy mature tree releases enough oxygen back into the atmosphere to support two human beings for one year. There are more than 1.8 CAA members in Ontario and if each and every one of them participates in this program we are sure that we can achieve this goal.
