Scarborough’s Holy Spirit Catholic School wins 2015 TD Tree Bee

TORONTO, ON, NOVEMBER 23, 2015 – This past Friday, elementary students from across the Greater Toronto Area had the opportunity to compete in TD’s annual Tree Bee competition.

TD Tree Bee is a fun and friendly competition in which students work in teams to identify tree species in Ontario and test their knowledge of forests and forest management.

“The Tree Bee program was designed to engage students in appreciating the beauty, diversity, and importance of Ontario’s forests,” stated Rob Keen, CEO of Forests Ontario. “With over 120 students from 10 schools across the GTA participating, Tree Bee is an important educational program to engage students in Ontario’s outdoors.”

Tree Bee dates back to 1952 and is Forests Ontario’s oldest education program. Every year, the program provides teachers with classroom resources to introduce students in grades 4-6 to Ontario’s native trees and forests. These resources guide students in identifying trees and understanding the importance of forests in our daily lives.

This year, the TD Tree Bee champs were from Holy Spirit Catholic School (pictured, right). St. Aidan Catholic School won the Team Trophy, which is presented to the team with the highest aggregate school score. Both schools are from the Scarborough area.

The TD Tree Bee would not be possible without the support of the TD Friends of the Environment Foundation (FEF). TD FEF’s support has enabled Forests Ontario to revamp this unique program to engage more students by developing freely accessible online learning resources available in 2016 through the Tree Bee website.

In addition, Forests Ontario has developed a “Tree Bee Teacher Guide,” which outlines learning objectives and curriculum links in the program as well as guides for using resources in classrooms and organizing independent Tree Bee competitions.
