Planting Trees. Growing Goodwill.

Posted: May 22, 2018

By Clayton Miller, VP Business Development – Revolution Recycling

Revolution Recycling is into year three of our Recycling E-Waste Grows Trees program in partnership with Forest Recovery Canada. The program still feels fresh and exciting and creates opportunities to engage with our customers nearly every single day.

Revolution was founded in 2012 with a mission to service small, medium and large businesses to conveniently and securely recycle their electronics. We are one of Canada’s fastest growing ITAD and Recycling firms, recently moving into a state of the art 130,000 sq/ft ITAD and e-waste recycling facility in Toronto, ON. Revolution is a wholly owned subsidiary of Shift Recycling.

Planting Roots with our Customers.

Our customers are made aware of the program in subtle ways with slogans appearing at the bottom of corporate email signatures and on invoices. We post the odd blog with updates but otherwise just quietly go about planting trees. We are constantly getting notes and comments about how good it makes our customers feel. They love booking a pickup with Revolution Recycling knowing there’s a little extra good being done every time our truck roles up to their dock.

Why does this program resonate so much? The beauty is in it’s simplicity: We plant a tree for every pickup we do. Nothing complex. No strings attached. People love the 1 to 1 exchange. If we pickup from your business, a tree will be planted – over 3000 to date and on track to add another 2000 in 2018.

In awe of trees.

And why trees? Because people loves trees on a primal level. Trees give us shade and protection. They give us air – and clean it at the same time! They are old and wise and people can sense these things when in their presence. Trees represent all that is delicate and powerful in nature and they connect us to our history and to the land itself.

If one considers the impacts of climate change and the things we can do most urgently to fix the problem, trees have got to be near the top of the list. They resist erosion caused by flooding while pulling green house gases from the air, releasing oxygen in it’s place. Trees are a renewable carbon neutral fuel source.

A challenge to other businesses.

As a recycling company doing our part to refurbish, reuse and recycle electronics while ensuring secure data destruction, the alignment of this program with our brand is obvious. But in truth – what brand isn’t aligned with trees? They are apolitical, universal and loved by all, and your customers will love your business for planting more of them.

The fine folks at Forest Recovery Canada make it easy. We started our program with a phone call and it grew from there. I encourage other businesses to consider this type of initiative. Grow some goodwill for your business, you’ll be amazed at how good it feels.
