Toronto Christmas Market Kicks Off at the Distillery District

TORONTO, ON, November 28, 2014 – The 2014 Shop.ca Toronto Christmas Market presented by American Express has officially opened to the public at the Distillery Historic District. Running from November 28th to December 21st, this is the fifth year that the Distillery has hosted a European inspired Christmas market featuring hundreds of local vendors and artisans.

Forests Ontario will once again be present throughout the market selling real, locally grown Christmas trees, from the increasingly popular “condo-sized” trees to eight footers along with wreaths and other green gifts for the holiday season. All trees and wreaths are provided by Somerville Nurseries in Alliston, Ontario. Proceeds will help support Forests Ontario’s forest restoration and tree planting efforts across the province, through initiatives such as the 50 Million Tree Program.

Forests Ontario also had the privilege to donate the centerpiece of the market, a 52-foot white spruce decorated with over 18,000 lights and ornaments and located next to the main stage area. Provided in partnership with Ontario Wood, this tree will bring some of the beauty of Ontario’s forests to the city.

Every year, thousands of Christmas trees are sold in Ontario, whether real or fake. Ontario’s forestry sector includes 500 producers across the province supplying more than one million trees every year. When we choose real, locally grown trees, we are not only supporting local producers and local economies, but choosing sustainable and eco-friendly products.

As the most natural of products, no fossil fuels are required in the production of real Christmas trees. Unlike artificial trees, real trees are also 100% biodegradable. When it comes to disposal, trees can be collected by your local municipality and turned into mulch to be spread through local parks, adding valuable nutrients to the soil.

Forests Ontario invites everyone to join us at the Distillery and help make the holidays greener. The Toronto Christmas Market is open from 12 pm-9 pm on Tuesday-Friday and 10 am-9 pm on Saturdays and Sundays.
