Trees Ontario Trains New Seed Forecasters

June 4, 2009 – Trees Ontario, in partnership with the Essex Region Conservation Authority (ERCA), hosted a free tree seed forecasting workshop on June 3, 2009 at the ERCA office in Essex, ON.

The workshop was developed in response to the need to replenish and maintain tree seed inventories and improve seed collection efficiencies across the province of Ontario.

The first half of the day was spent indoors learning about tree seed biology, identification and forecasting. The second half of the day was spent outdoors, developing observation skills during a field tour of the surrounding wooded areas. This workshop was geared towards individuals with a strong interest, and some background, in tree seed collection and forecasting.

Collecting seeds, tracking those that sprout and compiling information about seed availability, location, type and quantity is an important component in further building Ontario’s tree planting infrastructure, and it is vital to the overall success of long-term planning for tree planting in Ontario.

Trees Ontario will be hosting a Certified Seed Collector Workshop on August 11th and 12th.
